Why So Many Frenchies End Up In Rescue

French bulldogs are one of America’s most loved breeds. These sweet, loyal pups easily steal hearts- but when a frenchie parent isn’t prepared to care for their pet through sickness AND in health, they might start to feel like they’ve bitten off more than they can chew.

Frenchies most often end up in rescues because they have developed health issues that their owners are not equipped to deal with. Other reasons frenchies are taken in by rescues include abandonment, abuse and neglect.

Along with the long list of positive traits that french bulldogs come with, they also have a high risk of being plagued with various health issues as they grow older. Read on to learn more about why so many of these sweet pups end up in rescue.

Common Frenchie Health Issues

Because French Bulldogs are a pure breed, have short legs and a shortened facial structure, they are more prone to health issues than other breeds.

Some of the more common frenchie health issues are:

  • Breathing Issues
  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Skin infections
  • Issues with mobility
  • Ear infections

These illnesses and disorders require dedicated care and proper attention. When adopting a new puppy, many people do not do enough research on the breed they are bringing home. As the pup grows older and starts presenting some of these symptoms, the owners may not feel equipped to provide the care required, and end up surrendering their pet to a rescue.

Owner Abandonment

Unfortunately, not all pet owners take the time to find a reputable rescue for their pet, and instead choose to abandon their furry friend. It breaks our hearts to know there are so many Frenchies out there suffering alone because no one took the time to find a place for them to go.

When stray frenchies are found, they are usually taken to a local shelter. Many of these shelters will reach out and then transfer care to a french bulldog-specific rescue.

Abuse & Neglect

Sadly, many of the frenchies being cared for by rescues are victims of abuse or neglect. When authorities recover an animal from an abusive home, they will reach out to a rescue partner that is equipped to care for the animal and heal any injuries they may have sustained to their body or spirit.

What Can You Do?

We are so proud of and grateful for our frenchie rescue partners. Here at Frenchie Coffee Roasters, we choose a different animal rescue every month to partner with and share a portion of our sales- fulfilling our mission to help animals in need.

How can you help? Frenchie Rescues are always looking for volunteers to cuddle, play and care for their pups. You can also make a monetary donation to most rescues through their website or by visiting them in-person.

Most importantly, stay informed and spread awareness. The more people know, the more they can help! Frenchies deserve a stable, loving home where they will be cared for unconditionally. By encouraging others to do their research, you might save someone from adopting an animal that they are not prepared to care for.
